State of Wyoming Drug Testing News

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2016, Wyoming had a rate of 8.7 deaths per 100,000 persons, which was lower than the national rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 persons during the same time. As of 2012, Wyoming had between five and 10 babies per 1,000 births that were born with neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, which is where babies are born having withdrawals from the drugs that their mothers were taking while in utero.

Research revealed that in 2015, Wyoming had an estimated 33,900 cases of acute Hepatitis C (HCV), with over 64 percent of these acute cases attributing to Injection Drug Use, which is when a drug user uses unsanitary needles, passing infected blood to themselves, and in turn developed different diseases such as HCV and HIV.  In 2014, an estimated 269 persons were diagnosed with HIV infection in Wyoming, and out of those 269 persons, approximately 21.4 percent of males and 19.1 percent of females attained HIV through Injection Drug Use. Also in 2015, Wyoming providers wrote 65.3 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons, approximately 383,000 prescriptions, which was just below the rate of the national average which was 70 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons, in the same time frame.

Marijuana in the State of Wyoming

According to FindLaw, recreational marijuana use and its possession, sale, trafficking and cultivation is prohibited and illegal in Wyoming. In fact, Wyoming has some of the strictest marijuana laws in the nation depending on the amount of marijuana the person is found with and how many times they have been arrested prior for the same thing. For example, a person caught with 3 ounces or less of marijuana faces a misdemeanor with jail time up to a year and a fine of $1,000. However, a third conviction can quickly turn into a five-year prison sentence with a $5,000 fine.

Also, if you are caught selling marijuana, you can face up to 10 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine. These consequences can quickly double if the offense or sale is relating to a minor or near a drug-free zone, like a public or private school.

In the state of Wyoming, medical marijuana is prohibited, however, the law does allow the use of CBD oil to treat patients with seizures, but in the same token, provides no legal means on in-state access. Three bills were considered in 2017 to expand this very limited protection, but as of now, none have moved forward.

A drug test is a technical analysis of a biological specimen, for example urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, and/or oral fluid/saliva-to determine the presence or absence of specified parent drugs or their metabolites. Major applications of drug testing include detection of the presence of performance enhancing steroids in sport, employers and parole/probation officers screening for drugs prohibited by law (such as cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin) and police officers testing for the presence and concentration of alcohol (ethanol) in the blood commonly referred to as BAC (blood alcohol content). BAC tests are typically administered via a breathalyzer while urinalysis is used for the vast majority of drug testing in sports and the workplace. Numerous other methods with varying degrees of accuracy, sensitivity (detection threshold/cutoff), and detection periods exist. A drug test may also refer to a test that provides quantitative chemical analysis of an illegal drug, typically intended to help with responsible drug use.
